History of Zeequencha

It started in the 90s

Zeequencha was born out of a deep love for melodic electronic music and a passion for creating beauty through sound. The project was founded by William Sharpe in the 1990s in Aberdeen, Scotland, following his early immersion in the synth-driven music of the late 1980s.

As a teenager, William was captivated by the sounds of Erasure, Kraftwerk, Vince Clarke, and New Order. This passion evolved in the early '90s when he became part of Aberdeen’s underground dance scene, regularly attending the legendary Fever nightclub, a hub for house and electronic music lovers. It was there, among a loyal and spirited crowd, that William experienced some of the most formative nights of his musical life.

Alongside a few friends, William co-founded a band called Utopia, performing live sets at venues like The Hoochie Coochie Club. One of their tracks, Rushing, gained notable recognition after being played by Pete Tong on BBC Radio 1, a landmark moment for the group. The band made heavy use of analog gear—Minimoog, OSC Oscar, Roland Jupiter-8, TR-909, and an Atari computer running early Cubase software.

When William started university, Utopia evolved into Zeequencha—his solo music project that would span decades. Balancing a full-time international teaching career with music production, William has created hundreds of tracks, staying true to his melodic roots. Now based in Lisbon, Portugal, His current setup is simple, yet powerful, featuring Cubase 13, Ozone 11, and soft synths like Roland Jupiter 8 VST, Kontakt Sampler, OSC Oscar, Pigments, Nexus,  Serum and many more.

Zeequencha’s music has appeared on respected labels and platforms such as M-Sol Records, Pale Penguin, and Costa del Mar Radio, but the vast majority of releases are independent—a reflection of William’s creative freedom and artistic integrity.

The Zeequencha sound is always melodic, ranging from deep house, progressive house, and melodic trance to chillout, drum & bass, and even hard house and soul. Some tracks are made for the dancefloor, while others are meant to be enjoyed on the beach or at home, offering beauty, peace, and escape through music. Influences include Vargo, Aurosonic, Blank & Jones, Above and Beypond,  Cafe del Mar, Royksopp, Nora en Pure, Anjunadeep,  Above all, Zeequencha exists to celebrate the magic of electronic music. With each new release, the mission remains the same: to bring beauty into the world—one track at a time.
